Ensor

2024 was the Year of Ensor, and Ostend, his home town, certainly made sure we were aware of it. One of the things they organised was a collection of bookplates inspired by Ensor, created by all sorts of artists and illustrators, and I was invited to take part.

I particularly love the humour in Ensor’s work: the tiny figures, the hidden texts, the biting sarcasm. Hence the (lame) pun in my drawing. But
however much I admire his painting and use of colour: I am an illustrator, not a
painter. I love bold, clear lines, not hundreds of sketchy
little lines; I use flat colours with sharp shadows, not flowing, nuanced
colours. Comic-style drawings, then – and that’s what I’ve done here too.
